MOTUC Kobra Khan Review + Gallery

It seems like the last San Diego Comic Con was so long ago when we first got a look at Kobra Khan.  The wait has been long, although it has been supplemented with some real “triple-a” quality figures like Fisto, Shadow-Weaver, Leech, Demo-Man and more.  The “Year of the Snake,” as I like to call 2012, has begun with Kobra Khan who is the latest monthly Masters of the Universe Classics figure.

The vintage heavy year continues as another favorite of mine gets the Classics treatment.  Kobra Khan arrived this afternoon and I tore into that package with conviction, freeing him within minutes of stepping into my house.  I’m going to gush a little here, he’s incredible.  Much like last month’s Fisto he embodies what they are doing right with the Masters of the Universe Classics line.  He is the perfect mix of modern and vintage, and the alternate head and his companion give you the ability to choose the look you want.  Or you could also be like me and buy a couple more on the sale date to do both looks.

Kobra Khan has a good amount of new tooling.  Originally from pictures I thought the chest was just an overlay like they have done with various character’s armors, but when I got him I can see it is a completely new torso.  He also has new forearms, a new waist piece, and new shins that look oddly feathery.  The shins are particularly interesting because they hide the hole where the ankle joint should be, but unlike Vikor’s they do not tighten it.  His ankles are definitely a little loose and will probably decline in time as well like past figures that use the Skeletor feet.  I’ll have a better idea as to the quality of the ankles when I get my other day-of orders.

Kobra Khan comes with two heads, his vintage normal head and the more modern hooded head.  The hooded head is literally the same as the non hooded but they added it onto the back.  The hooded head is pretty grand looking and makes the figure a lot more menacing, but it also blocks a lot of the neck movement.  It’s also pretty hard to put his little creature on his shoulder when the hood is open.  His non-hooded head is true to the vintage version except that it can’t squirt water.  When the hood is down his companion creature sits comfortably on his shoulder.  One gripe I do have with the creature is that he doesn’t really have any way to latch onto Khan similar to Hordak’s companion pet.  Khan’s creature just rests on his shoulder, I also feel like he might be judging me.

Khan comes with one weapon, a red blaster similar to Zodac’s.  At first look you would even think it was just a redo of the blaster Zodac and then Wun-Dar had … but you would be wrong!  It has different fins and a slightly different shade of red.  Be warned though, Kobra Khan is right-handed and will not hold his blaster any other way.  His other hand is the Whiplash open hand, not much really fits in it.

This has been the first month in a while that only one figure came out, so it was nice to get that relief in the wallet department.  All things considered this is an excellent month because instead of sharing the attention with three other big time characters, Kobra Khan gets to slither in to the collection on his own.  He’s a great figure and I felt so good about him that I was willing to pay the increased $22 price to get a couple of extras the day of the sale.  Also note, that the delay apparently did not affect a handful of sub holders, but any day of orders are on delay … so they should start shipping in the next week or so.

This will be a good year for the Snake Men because we still have Snake Man-At-Arms, the Snake Men two pack, and an unnamed release later in the year.  Rumors have been Snake Face, but Rattlor is a possibility too.  We shall see as the Snake Men army grows!
