The Hobbit Thorin 6″ Review + Gallery

After doing an elf review, I felt it was time to pay attention to the second most important race in Middle Earth, the dwarf!  And what dwarf is more important to Bilbo Baggins’ adventure than Thorin Oakenshield?  No, seriously I would like to know who.  There are a few reasons I am very excited about getting Thorin.  First being that the dwarves were few and far between in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, hell most of them were dead.  Second, Thorin is just a plain bad-ass and I look forward to his role in the movies.

Thorin is perfectly scaled as a dwarf being not too big and not too small.  It is a balancing act because they are so middle of the pack when it comes to humanoid scale in the Tolkien universe.  He stands slightly taller than a Hobbit, and shorter than a human but bulkier in general.  Thorin is a very imposing figure because for his size he is quite large.  You can almost think of him as the Ram Man of the Hobbit line.

I like that Bridge Direct seems to consider accessories an important part of the figure.  They did a good job loading up Tauriel with weapons of all kinds and they have done the same with Thorin.  The other important part is that all of these parts have a place to go.  His small dagger/sword can either be held or sheathed in his belt.  His scimitar comes packed in a sheath that connects through a peg into a hole in his back.  Finally he wouldn’t be Thorin Oakenshield without his, well,  oaken shield.  His shield can be placed in a peg-hole on his left forearm.  I really like that he can actually have all of his accessories on him at the same time.

Tricksy Hobbit!

There is one other part that can either be called an accessory or a design choice.  His overcoat is removable.  His sculpt doesn’t suffer at all from taking the coat off either, in fact it opens up the articulation quite a bit.  At first I thought he was a little stationery for my liking, but once I got the coat off I was actually extremely impressed with his articulation.  It opens up a really nice range of motion with his head, arms, and legs.  You can really get him into some great battle poses this way.  I am probably going to display him without the coat, I think it looks THAT good this way.

Much like Tauriel the detail in his costume is fantastic, they really did a good job capturing the small details in the intricate costumes.  This is an especially rare feat for a mass-produced toy, I hope Bridge Direct keeps up this level of detail because it is something you don’t see at retail very much these days past maybe NECA’s movie figures.  The only complaint I would have is I think the detail is a little soft in the face, and it’s a pretty minor complaint as it still has a good likeness of Richard Armitage.

Thorin Oakenshield is far and away my favorite of the three Hobbit six-inch figures I picked up.  Despite my previous mention of the soft detail in the face, the rest of him is extremely strong.  This gets me very excited in hoping Bridge Direct gets the rest of the dwarves out in the six-inch scale … I will need them all!  The good news for that wish is that we have three years worth of movies and merchandising for them to accomplish that.

Liking this figure so much has also brought the thought into my head that I hope they continue with both the four-inch and six-inch lines.  I think they have something really special going with the smaller line, so I really think that is going to take off.  I just hope they stick with the six-inch line as well along the way, because it really would be criminal not to at least get the entire party of dwarves.

Thorin is actually up for preorder on Amazon if you want to grab him there.  They should be shipping soon and Amazon has a nice selection of characters from both scale lines up.  Go on and check out the rest of my gallery with Thorin Oakenshield, and stay tuned because I got more Hobbit goodness on the way with Mr. Baggins being next.
