MOTUC TOD Sorceress Review + Gallery

It’s been almost a year since we got the original Sorceress release.  We’ve also known about the Temple of Darkness Sorceress just as long as we have the regular version, so it almost feels like a relief to finally have her in my hands.

Temple of Darkness Sorceress is a traveling con exclusive shared between Grayskull Con (Germany), Power-Con (Los Angeles, CA), New York Comic Con (New York, NY), Toy Tokyo MOTU Art Show (New York, NY), and then leftover stock will be sold in December on Mattycollector.com.  All of those conventions have now happened and the limited stock Toy Tokyo had is gone as well, so make sure to keep an eye out for the TOD Sorceress sale date on Matty’s site.

MOTUC Temple of Darkness Sorceress Review

At first look you may think this is a simple repaint and for the most part it is.  However, it has a few subtle but very important changes to the original Sorceress release.  The first thing you will notice is she is all white with an off-white headdress.  I know the original release is the correct color scheme, but I really dig the all-white look for Sorceress.  It’s a nice clean look that I almost prefer over the blue and orange color scheme.

The color changes were obvious, but there is another change that makes her a lot better than the original release: her legs.  I don’t believe the “2.0” female buck hips are an improvement over the original, which were the hips the original Sorceress sported.  This version has the original hips, which opens up her range of movement tremendously.  Along with the original hips and legs, she also has the Teela boots painted white, again I think the original formula seemed to work very well so I am happy with the choice.

TOD Sorceress’ wings are now white-translucent.  Again I really like it, but I also liked the liberties they took with layering the colors on the original so the comparison between the two is a wash there.  Sorceress also comes with her Staff of Zoar, but no actual Zoar.  I’m not upset about this because I have more than enough of that bird in every color of the rainbow.  Apparently Mattel felt they needed to correct this “wrong” and it will be here with the Great Unrest Weapons Pak, sigh.

Well it balances I suppose?

Her other accessory is the other big draw, the orb stand.  I could have sworn when we originally saw the orb stand it was white, I’m not sure if it was just the gypsum prototype or if there was a last-minute decision to change it.  Regardless while I wasn’t thrilled with the color change it has grown on me, especially after having it in hand.  It is cast in clear blue plastic and sprayed a granite type color as it goes up forming into a solid color up top.  This is supposed to hold the orb that came with King Grayskull, so if you lost it like I did I feel your pain!  A kind soul is helping me get another one, but until then I will just put random things on it.

MOTUC Temple of Darkness Sorceress Review

Temple of Darkness Sorceress is a great all around exclusive.  A repaint that makes a new character and also includes an accessory that fans who have been collecting the line all along will really appreciate.  They also went the extra mile to improve upon the formula of the original, and all those improvements seem justified … unlike something like the slightly different green Clawful mace in the new weapons pak.  Sorceress is well worth getting ahold of, and can even sub in for the original if you were one of the unfortunate people who missed her release back in February.

All of the conventions she will be offered at are over and Toy Tokyo has sold out of her, so the last chance to pick her up will be Mattycollector.com at a yet-to-be-announced date.  If you don’t feel like waiting you can grab her off of Amazon, but right now the prices are a little bit high.
