Blizzcon Cute But Deadly Kerrigan, Diablo, and Arthas

This is one of those reviews that nobody but me is going to care about.  Mostly because it’s one of those things I really wanted when it came out (almost a year ago), but didn’t particularly care to pay what people were asking at the time.  Occasionally as a toy collector patience pays off, exclusive hype dies down, and a deal is to be had for me!  That happened with this set as I finally saw a decent priced auction and pulled the trigger.  It came to around $30 shipped which I was pretty happy to pay for some high quality vinyl figures; especially ones based off of Blizzard properties.

So far the ‘Cute but Deadly‘ line has had two releases and both have been exclusives.  The first being this set.  Correction (thanks Yaanu!), there have been THREE ‘Cute but Deadly‘ releases and all have been exclusives.  The first was Sylvanas at SDCC 2013.  The second is this set.  It debuted at Blizzcon 2013 and was part of the freebie bag you got for attending.  The third release was at this year’s San Diego Comic Convention, the Blizzard booth had a cloaked version of Zeratul.  I’ve gotten my share of complimentary bags or baskets from conventions, and few include items as good as this set.  This was a pretty great gift to get for going to Blizzcon so of course shortly after the show people were flipping these for over $100 a set.

Blizzcon Cute but Deadly Arthas Diablo Kerrigan Set

The prices certainly have cooled off since last year, and now this set is pretty easy to get between $30 – $50 which is a totally reasonable price.  Valve is charging $30 each for their similar styled Demihero line … and I am very tempted to get into that too, but that’s for another time.  Zeratul is creeping down into the $20 range which is when I will snatch him up!

Enough about my financial hangups of collecting this line, how are the figures?

Well, they couldn’t have picked a better selection of characters to represent the big three Blizzard titles.  Arthas, Diablo, and Kerrigan were great choices and made the transition to “cute” rather well.  For anybody who doesn’t know Arthas is from the Warcraft universe (Warcraft 1 – 3, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, etc.), Kerrigan is from the Starcraft universe, and Diablo is shockingly from the Diablo universe.  Those are the big three titles for Blizzard.

Arthas Menethil is probably one of the most beloved villains of the Warcraft universe.  Warcraft 3’s story pretty much follows his fall from grace, corruption, and eventual taking the throne as the Lich King.  An entire World of Warcraft expansion was also built around eventually defeating him in Northrend.  He was killed as the final raid boss of his World of Warcraft expansion, and as far as lore is concerned he is still dead.  Cute but Deadly Arthas has a wonderful brooding look about him.  The detail on his armor is fantastic, and his sword, Frostmourne, comes separate and can be plugged into his right hand.

Sarah Kerrigan is another corruption story, it’s pretty much the only storyline Blizzard has unfortunately.  Kerrigan was originally a Terran Ghost with psychic abilities introduced early in the first Starcraft game.  As the story goes they are attacked and she is presumed dead, only to later be revealed that she was taken by the zerg and infested with their DNA.  Kerrigan dons the title “Queen of Blades” and pretty much takes over as the most powerful creature in the universe after the death of the Overlord.  Things get slightly weird in Starcraft 2 as they turn her human, but when Jim Raynor is presumed dead she converts herself back into a zerg.  The story isn’t over yet, so I suppose we will see where it goes.

The Kerrigan figure is fairly simple, but the sculpting of her hair is beautiful!  The one thing I would watch out for is her wings as they are very small and could snap if you aren’t careful.

Finally we have Diablo, the main villain of Diablo!  He definitely looks like a baby Diablo and is the one that seems to take the most liberties with the character.  I like him because he’s cute and he’s making the devil sign with his hands.  Of all the figures he most requires his stand since he stands on his tail.

Cute but Deadly Diablo Blizzcon

This is a great little set.  If you have a thing for Blizzard characters these are a fun batch to stick on a shelf, desk, or the dash of your starship.  It looks like they plan to continue the line since there was a SDCC exclusive this year, and maybe more to come at Blizzcon this year!  If you don’t want to scour eBay you can always check Amazon as they have both the Arthas, Kerrigan, and Diablo set … as well as the Zeratul release as well.  I’m interested to see how these guys mix in with the DOTA2 Demiheroes figures?  I guess when the prices drop I can do a follow-up.

  1. Actually, the Blizzcon set is the second, and the SDCC Zeratul is the third. The actual first release was from SDCC 2013, with a single Sylvanas Windrunner. It wasn’t officially labelled under the “Cute But Deadly” banner, but at their Blizzard panel they explained that it was a part of the lineup.

    1. Dammit, now I have to track that one down as well!

The completist in me thanks you, my wallet does not 😛

Also added the info you gave me, thanks again for the correction!
