Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Legends Drax Review

I bought the whole Hasbro Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy wave back in June, but for some reason I lost interest in reviewing them shortly after Rocket.  While he isn’t to blame for my disregard of the rest of the wave, the movie version of Rocket Raccoon was a pretty disappointing release.  So I’ve decided that I am not going to include him in any future Guardians of the Galaxy reviews.  Instead he will be replaced by comic Rocket Raccoon, one of my favorite figures!

Like Rocket, movie Drax is also the second Marvel Legends action figure of his character.  The comic version of Drax was released way back in the Arnim Zola wave a few years back.  Unlike Rocket the comic version of Drax is not my favorite.  Comic Drax is in need of a major makeover, but word from Hasbro’s SDCC panel is that a new comic based Drax should be coming next year.  Eventually that comic team will be complete; we’ll get there one of these days.

This wave, however, is based on the movie and we have the Dave Bautista version of Drax.  I have to give credit where credit is due, Drax is probably the best likeness in the wave.  The Batista look is dead on.  Whoever sculpted this figure should take a shot at one of those hard to capture likenesses such as Sigourney Weaver or Harrison Ford.  I don’t intend to be mean to Batista but they did a great job of capturing his signature blank stare.  That stare where it feels like he’s intently examining something while his mind is completely blank.  It’s almost a rare gift.

The character in the movie played to Batista’s talents: deadpan and being a giant muscled guy.  This figure not only captures his look, but it captures his essence.  It’s wonderful in that respect.  The ability to capture the true essence of a character is rare in this wave.  I would have gladly traded having a bad Drax for a great Rocket Raccoon, but this is the hand we were dealt.

Articulation is there.  Tattoos are there.  Paint applications look strong.  Great sculpt.  Everything lines up for this figure.  Everything except he’s just not an exciting character.  That’s probably not fair to such a well made figure, but this Drax just isn’t terribly exciting.  I think I’d enjoy him a lot more if he deadpanned literal quips back at me.  But on the other hand it would be stupid not to include him in my Guardians of the Galaxy movie display.

I preordered Drax along with the entire Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Legends wave on Amazon.  It was easy and they shipped it to me on release helping me avoid running around to toy stores.  No incomplete Groot here!  I hope they start doing the Amazon preorder more often, it’s nice.  If you didn’t get in on it back then he’s still available now cheaper than I bought him for.  Damn!
