Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Box Set Exclusive

Marvel Legends Guardians of the Galaxy Box Set Review

The Guardians of the Galaxy exclusive box set is what happens when Hasbro looks over their giant library of parts and realizes there is still money to be made!  Back at San Diego Comic Convention 2014 during the Hasbro Marvel panel it was mentioned that there would be a comic-based Guardians of the Galaxy set in 2015.  They stayed true to their word and a five-pack of the main cast (Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket Raccon) was produced as an Entertainment Earth exclusive.

The challenge with this set is that most of the cast has gotten comic themed figures in the last few years.  Rocket was a build-a-figure, Star-Lord was part of the Thanos Imperative SDCC set, and Drax was in the Arnim Zola wave.  For any collector that missed out on a few of those this set will probably be a lot more enticing.  But how would they convince those hoarders like myself who already own them all to drop a phat hundred on this box set?  Like I mentioned earlier, they opened up the old parts bin and attempted to make this box set worth your while.

Drax

Our friend Drax is a dramatic improvement over the previous entry.  He’s been completely redone using the Hyperion upper body, movie Drax’s lower body, and Radioactive Man’s head.  Yes, Hasbro has basically put together a glorified custom (or kitbash), but it’s a really good official custom!  Drax includes some new forearms armor along with some armored hands.  These can be removed and substituted for plain green hands.  He also includes two sets of knives: the movie versions and a reuse Warpath’s bowie knives.  The movie versions can be holstered on his lower legs.  The larger ones, unfortunately, can’t be stored anywhere and only his silver right hand can hold them (unless you want to REALLY stretch out the green hands).

Drax is good, I give him most of my love!  It’s also worth noting that we now have THREE Marvel Legends Drax figures.  Whodathunkit?

Who?

Rocket Raccoon

Rocket is a new head and painted tail on the old build-a-figure body.  With the new head you end up losing the articulated jaw, but the comic deco is pretty nice.  Rocket benefits the most from the added accessories, he comes with: the original BAF’s gun, a larger pulse rifle, a repaint of Agent Coulson’s gun, and a potted version of Groot.  If you are a Marvel Universe collector you will recognize it as the baby Groot that came with the 3 3/4″ Rocket.

As I’ve mentioned before this set was made possible by a dig through the Hasbro toy and accessory bin.

Groot

This is a case of the control art giving me a certain expectation, and then the product delivering something else.  It’s the movie Groot body with a new comic inspired head.  Unfortunately the movie body isn’t the best representation of the comic version of the character.  He should probably have broader shoulders and larger hands.  Even without any work being done to the body, had they just changed up the hands it would have made a world of difference.

The final verdict is that this ends up being a pretty good comic stylized head on a body that doesn’t really jive with it.

Gamora

This figure is essentially what makes the set.  Gamora is the one true all new figure, and they did a bang up job with her.  She uses the Moonstone base body and features two heads, a cape, a cloth poncho, and a sword.  The alternate heads are brilliantly done because one has a hood sculpted over it so that it can be used with the cape; while the other head enables her to let her hair down.  Both looks are executed extremely well.

The only complaint I have with this figure is the cloth poncho because it just doesn’t look good.  This is easily remedied by never using it ever!

My final thoughts are that this is a very strong set of figures.  My preorder cost around $100 shipped because at the time they were offering a coupon and free shipping.  At $20 a figure with a bunch of accessories I find it to be a pretty solid deal.  At the slightly higher ($120) non-coupon price the set gets a little less appealing at $25 per figure.  I still think it’s worth it, but if you’ve been reading this site for any length of time you should know I have a pretty warped opinion of worth.  There are probably a lot of variables to consider depending on what type of collector you are …

Personally I’d take this set over the Amazon Avengers 4-Pack or the Target 3-Pack of Ultron, Vision, and Hulk.

This set can still be had over at Entertainment Earth!

  1. Looks like a good set! I am only familiar with the Guardians via the movie, so I don’t think I’ll be investing, but it’s nice to see that this has been done for the fans.

  2. I had some saved up gift cards, and decided to use them on this set.
Luckily I did not have any of these characters, movie or otherwise, in the 6 inch scale, so I am very happy with it. I completely agree with you about Groot’s hands being too small. I think even painting the Carnage hands brown and slapping them on there would have been an improvement.

    1. I was actually thinking about grabbing a second Anti-Venom and using those hands.

I’m just a little scared to boil and pop Groot’s hands, I’d hate to break him.
