Marvel Legends Walgreens First Appearance Daredevil Review

Last year, Walgreens resurrected the previously canceled Agent Venom and there was much rejoicing!  This year Walgreens came through even bigger and better with two brand new exclusives: Eric O’Grady Ant-Man and First Appearance Daredevil.  Both figures have been fairly easy to spot both online and in stores.  Besides, it’s actually worth checking out a physical Walgreens store from time to time as they’ve been a good spot to obtain new figures.  These stores are turning into a modern mecca of action figure collecting.

Earlier this year we got the red-costumed Daredevil in the Spider-Man Hobgoblin wave, and it was a huge upgrade from previous attempts.  It was only natural to expect that we would eventually see the first appearance colors.  Walgreens certainly came to the plate here, offering that Daredevil and in addition he includes a bonus Matt Murdock head.  There is no build-a-figure part even though his UPC puts him in the Spider-Man Legends series.

The Murdock head is nice because it actually has quite a bit of utility.  First, it is not a new sculpt.  It’s a repaint of Hawkeye’s head.  It fits fine on either Daredevil body, although it scales just slightly smaller than the masked head … which in a way makes sense since a masked head would be bigger than an unmasked one!  I’ve found that he also works well with the suited body from Coulson, Chameleon, or Bruce Banner in the latest Avengers four-pack.  The only thing to be concerned about is matching the skin tone to the neck since the head has a slightly red tint.

If you really want to go outside the box, the Murdock head isn’t a bad unmasked Cyclops head.  I’m referring to the Cyclops that came out as part of the Toys “R” Us Jubilee wave last year.  It’s one of the easiest figures from that wave to track down if you want a simple custom.  Paint his hair brown if you need to make it even more accurate.

I’ve heard from a few people that at some angles the Matt Murdock head looks like Nic Cage.  I can kind of see it.  Personally, I think he looks like Gambit himself, Mr. Channing Tatum.  Anyone else?

The base Daredevil figure is fantastic, so if you were a fan of that then I’m sure you’ll like this one.  The gummy billy clubs are still there, unfortunately.  I’ve always preferred this color scheme over the all red, so of course I was going to buy this.  Like I really need to make that excuse since I buy just about every Marvel Legends figure.  I am proud to say I have not purchased the new Amazon Avengers 4-pack, and I just want to pat myself on the back for that one.

Daredevil can be found in store if you are lucky.  It’s probably much easier just to buy him online.  Walgreens offers free shipping on orders over $35 so just throw some deodorant or other things you will need eventually in the cart to meet that quota.  Of course if the red Daredevil is more to your fancy he is also available here!

  1. I’ll definitely pick up this guy. I always preferred this costume, too. Since Hasbro’s first attempt at this version had the ‘DD’ sculpted on the chest, instead of just the one giant ‘D’, it kind of bothered me and I skipped it. I’m glad we’re finally getting another shot at this costume.
