Mattel MOTUC Dragstor Review

The Masters of the Universe Classics collector’s burn out hit me hard this year.  We’re already in the second to last month of 2015 and I’ve maybe reviewed a handful of MOTUC figures from this subscription period.  I just can’t bring myself to do it of late.  It’s not even that the figures are bad, but I just have no motivation to take a critical look at them.  There are a few rare exceptions, but for the most part I’ve opened my figures, stuck them in a bag, and threw them into a bin.  This “finishing the vintage line” year has just drained all of my enthusiasm for He-Mans dry.

Occasionally my daughter will notice that I got a female (and NA He-Man for some reason, she loves that goofy looking thing) figure and snatch it as well … she needs her princesses after all!  I keep finding Perfuma and Angella tucked away under a couch or sitting on a chair in the kitchen having tea with the likes of Elsa and Tiana.  I’m glad that at least somebody is playing with these figures that I am currently neglecting.

With the lack of Masters of the Universe coverage, Preternia is not living up to the Preternia name!  Why did I choose this name for my site again?  I’ve really backed myself into a corner, and I have far too much content parked here to ever change it.  I guess it’s better than if I had named this site JonsHeManReviewSite.com, or IloveThemHeMans.com, or AnimeJohnCena.com.  Like Sebastian in the Little Mermaid always said, “I’m crabby today, leave me alone.”  Actually, I don’t think he said that.  But there was something about grass or seaweed always being greener …

Dragstor does not transform, nor is he really a vehicle.  He’s just a guy who has a fake wheel coming out of his abdomen.  After getting Buzz-Saw Hordak I’m a little disappointed they didn’t attempt to build an actual wheel into his mid-section.  If BS Hordak and the upcoming Laser Light figures were an indicator, the current design team seemed totally on board with figuring out action features.  Not Dragstor though, back to the overlay vanity features with you sir!

To clarify, I wasn’t expecting the ripcord action feature of the vintage toy.  Just the ability for the wheel to be functional would have been satisfying enough.  If he was able to roll around I’d also request that his neck to have enough range of motion to hit a flying Superman pose.

While the tire being a static part of the overlay isn’t a best case scenario, at least the overlay is done right.  Last year was the “fat suit” epidemic, but this year they have done their best to keep it to a minimum.  The cut of his overlay is perfect and allows him to have his arms completely at their side.

Dragstor comes packed with two accessories: a crossbow and whip with an axe-head on the tip of it.  As a member of the evil Horde, it is a requirement for him to have a crossbow.  This crossbow is actually really cool looking.  It is parted together from various car parts, and since Dragstor is a “Transforming Evil Warrior Vehicle” the transmirrion parts make total sense!  There is a peg-hole in his back that can be used to store the crossbow when not in use.

I’m kind of tired of these hard plastic whips, though.  They just look silly, and are stuck in a pose that would be physically impossible.  They aren’t the worst things in the world, but I’ve never displayed a figure holding one.  They usually go right into the accessory bin.

Dragstor is the second to last figure needed to complete the vintage line in Masters of the Universe Classics!  The two Laser Light variants will close out the year next month, the vintage line will be complete, and then we will move on to even more obscure characters!

I actually really like the look of Dragstor.  His design is pretty out there (I never had one as a kid so this is my first foray with the character), and the translation to Classics went very smooth if you aren’t heavily invested in the action feature.  I’m a huge fan of the head sculpt.  I’ve also noticed that Mattel has been making it harder and harder to remove the heads from the figures.  While trying to pull off Dragstor’s head I felt like I was on the verge of breaking his neck joint.  They appear to be making the peg hole in the heads much tighter these days.  Pulling off female heads is horrifying, and I’ve broken a couple neck pegs doing so with some of the latest POP ladies.

Dragstor is still up on Mattycollector.com as of the publication of this review.  Should he be gone, I’d head over to Amazon where you can probably get a decent deal with much more reasonable shipping prices.  I do look forward to next year where I’ll be paying substantially less for Masters of the Universe Classics figures … the price break for the the two subscriptions is most welcome.  Maybe it will even lessen my personal MOTUC burn out?  Who knows?

I should maybe review Veena, she’s pretty swell too.  This wasn’t a bad month for MOTUC.
