S. H. Figuarts Star Wars First Order Stormtrooper Review

Remember when I said I was going to try and keep my S.H. Figuarts Star Wars collection to only prequels?  I lied.  I had a semi-gushing review of the Clone Trooper written, but never got around to photography.  So it will probably sit forever, unfinished.  But what I would have said in that review is that I can’t just limit myself to the prequels because these Bandai Figuarts Star Wars toys are far too good.  I’ve decided I’m pretty much all in with this line.  It feels like the next logical step up from the 3 3/4″ line I collected for almost half my life.  Sure, there are other options out there but this line gives me the most play and display value for the price.  Figuarts just feels right for me now.

By now I’m sure most of us have seen the new Star Wars movie.  If you haven’t I won’t get into spoilers too heavily (even though I feel people may have overdone the whole “don’t tell me spoilers” thing this time around) but I felt the Stormtrooper was more appropriately handled in this movie than in any previous iteration.  They actually felt like a military, and not the Putties from Power Rangers.  They had personalities and were not just a uniform mass.  In the case of Finn they lightly touched on issues such as PTSD.  It was certainly a refreshing take on the soldiers of the Empire (or First Order).

The First Order Stormtrooper comes packaged with a blaster and two extra sets of hands.  The hand breakdown is as follows: two closed fists, two open but clasping hands, and two pointing hands.  The pointing hands double as the blaster holding appendage since the finger fits perfectly over the trigger of the gun.

The articulation scheme is almost identical to the Figuarts Clone Trooper (the one I didn’t review!).  The First Order Stormtrooper still does not include those drop down hips, but you’ll find he generally has a better range of motion than the Clone.  It’s most noticeable in the head.  The First Order helmet is more compact and leaves a lot more space for neck movement.  While we are comparing I absolutely love the gloss finish on the First Order trooper.  Not that I hate the matte of the Clone, but the gloss is just so clean and pretty.  The First Order takes a lot of care to keep their gear polished and beautiful.

One of the biggest aspects I find appealing about this trooper is the body proportions.  It seems they made a point to give the First Order Stormtroopers more average human proportions.  Notably the thighs are thicker, upper body is larger, and the feet are smaller.  This looks to accommodate that Stormtroopers can be both male, female, and of all shapes and sizes.  Again, as I mentioned before they just handled the overall Stormtrooper concept better in this movie.

There isn’t much not to like about the First Order Stormtrooper.  Bandai’s S.H. Figuarts has been on fire with the latest batch of Star Wars releases, and it doesn’t look like they are letting up either.  I’m of the opinion that if you want some of the best Star Wars figures being made then skip Hasbro’s Black Series and come to Figuarts.  You won’t be disappointed … unless the only one you buy is Vader, then you may.  I still don’t have him, Luke, or any of the Stormtroopers.  Oddly enough I’m not in a huge rush to pick them up either.

I’d preorder the shit out of a Figuarts Rey though.

It’s always best to import these things, but if you need the comfort of Amazon that option is available as well.  It’ll run you anywhere from $40 – $50 per figure.  I wouldn’t go too far out of that range though, these are pretty plentiful and can be found at decent prices if you look around.

Oh, enjoy the only picture I took for my Clone Trooper review!
