NECA Aliens Lt Ripley Kenner Review

NECA Aliens Lt. Ripley (Kenner Tribute) Review

The 90’s were a weird time where “R” rated properties like Alien and Predator would also have children’s toy lines.  I had these toys as a kid.  Sure, I had to butter my mother up a little bit to get them, but in the end I got what I wanted.  The Alien line was my jam back then.  It was probably a decade later that I actually saw Aliens for the first time, but I loved these figures and the crazy worlds I could create with them.  What kid wouldn’t want Space Marines fighting weird animal-themed Aliens?

I think that anybody paying attention had to assume that a Kenner Ripley would be coming at some point.  NECA decided to use the first official “Alien Day” on April 26, 2016 as the release date for her.  She is exclusive to Toys ‘R’ Us and Hastings.  I preordered from Hastings, but got impatient so I searched out and ended up finding her at my local Toys ‘R’ Us the day after the big event.

When you boil it down, this figure is a straight repaint of the Aliens version of Ripley with the bandolier placed in the opposite direction and a scarf around her neck.  She also includes a smart gun that we will likely see packed with Vasquez in wave nine.  Sure, it would have been cool to include a flamethrower with a telescoping flame effect.  But I understand this is a budget friendly variant, so the smart gun is an okay substitution.

I do wish her hands were able to hold the thing a bit better, however.  Her right hand slides into the bottom holster fine, but the left really can’t hold the handle it’s supposed to.  Instead I find it easier to just rest her left hand on the bottom of the gun to steady it.

If there was ever an appropriate place for a screaming Ripley head, this release would be perfect.  I like the facial expression she has and it worked well with her original series five release.  However, this Ripley is holding a smart gun and it would be sweet to have her screaming or at least angry while firing it.

From the beginning I had a hunch they were going to do this.  However, I’m surprised it turned out as good as it did.  Besides the scale, accessory, and the fact that it actually looks like Sigourney Weaver, this is a pretty sweet representation of an old toy I loved as a kid.  I don’t buy as many Alien figures these days as I used to, but this was something I had to have.  NECA did a great job making a fun exclusive for the Alien celebration day.

Now that this Ripley exists, they better do justice to my favorite Xenomorph from the Kenner days: the Gorilla Alien!

As of today Toys ‘R’ Us has taken down her listing on their site.  However, I saw quite a few in the actual store so that’s always worth checking out.  Hastings still has her listed, but at a $10 markup.  Worse comes to worse, head on over to Amazon and see what you can find there.

* Note – the muzzle flash used in this review is not included with Ripley. It’s an accessory from NECA’s Devil May Cry Dante figure.

  1. I hope that we do see some of the Kenner Aliens eventually! I never had any myself, but some older kids in primary school did, and they were extremely cool. Given how well (most) of the Kenner Predators have been executed, I’d be very keen to see NECA take them on…my only thought is that there would probably need to be some fairly extensive new molds created…
