DCC Batman the Animated Series Batman Expressions Pack Review

It looks as though DC Collectibles’ Batman the Animated Series line is starting to wind down. We didn’t have much of anything in the way of reveals at Toy Fair besides the Batcave with Alfred and a few other odds and ends. In addition it seems like the single carded releases are just about over, and have been replaced by large multi-packs. While I’m sure it seems kind of sad, there is also only so much they can do. In a matter of two and a half years DCC actually managed to cover just about the entire cast of the television series in both looks.

I believe this set originally started out as a pure “expressions” pack that should have just included a handful of heads to put on the Batman figure that’s already out there. At some point this changed. It could have something to do with retailer support. Recently DC Collectibles canceled an accessory set from their Icons line due to lack of retail interest. I wonder if DCC thought the best way of saving this release was to pack the head with the actual figure and add a bunch of accessories? Essentially making an ultimate version of the Animated Series Batman.

Of course this is also now a deluxe figure which costs almost double that of a single-carded release.

While the extra helping of accessories and capes is great, it’s still all about the heads for me. I have two particular favorites: the surprised and Bruce head. Well, I should say the Bruce head would be a favorite if it actually sat on his neck correctly. It doesn’t. They needed to make the hole where the neck peg inserts deeper into the head. Instead, he has a foot-long neck with a little head sitting on top of it. This one really disappointed me. The rest are all pretty solid efforts, but some of them do get a bit samey for my tastes. Luckily I can use two of them as a home to his visor and gas mask accessories.

They included three capes to mess around with. One is a fabric and the other two are plastic. I believe there was a fourth that was cut but included in the promo images. It’s appreciated that they gave us the different materials, but I’m just not a fan of the fabric cape. I’m assuming it is included in order to allow him to sit in the Batmobile or Batwing, so to that extent it probably serves its purpose (I don’t own any of the vehicles).

I appreciate the work that went into making the stands in this line unique to each character. That said, said stands all take up too much space and are actually pretty terrible at holding the figures up. It took a $50 release to finally get a good figure/flight stand! The clamp also utilizes a spring so it really grips Batman tightly. After a couple years of fighting with figures that can barely stand, it would have been great if a smaller version of this stand was included with each release. Instead of what we actually got.

Since I haven’t reviewed an animated Batman figure in a while I feel like I should mention one of my biggest problems with DC Collectibles figures, the lack of upper leg swivel. In my opinion it’s a necessary joint. These figures don’t have ball hips, so without a thigh-cut the legs are always stuck facing the same position. I’d love to put Batman in more dynamic action poses, but unfortunately he is a bit limited in that regard.

Truth be told, I would have probably bought the Batman Beyond set over this one, given a choice. However, my comic shop pulled the Expressions Pack for me instead. I’m not going to be the guy who leaves them stuck with extra stock, so I’ll take what they ordered specifically for me. At this point I’ll wait and see if the multi-figure packs go on sale later in the year. Over all, I have nothing against this Batman besides the awful implementation of his unmasked head. The truth is I only plan on maybe using one of his heads and that probably wasn’t worth $50.
