Marvel Legends Black Panther Okoye Series Nakia Review

Marvel Legends Black Panther Okoye Series Nakia Review

That Christmas Eve/late December Marvel Legends wave! Every year, one last set of figures hits early just to kick me when I’m down from all of that holiday shopping. Last year we got the Spider-Man themed Sandman build-a-figure wave. This year is something different and a little more exciting, the first ever Black Panther themed series. This wave consists of six new figures: MCU Black Panther, MCU Erik Killmonger, MCU Nakia, Blackbolt, Namor, and All New All Different Iron Man. Buying a full case will net you an extra MCU Black Panther and Erik Killmonger. Every figure except Iron Man comes with a part to build Okoye, who joins Nakia as another member of Black Panther’s Dora Milaje.

In the movie, Nakia is played by Lupita Nyong’o, who you may or may not recognize as Maz Kanata from the new Star Wars movies. So if you end up being a fan after seeing Black Panther, you could potentially own two Hasbro action figures of her! Nakia comes packed with her two chakram, Okoye’s torso, and Okoye’s weapons.

I love the colorful outfits of the Dora Milaje, but the real draw with this figure is the likeness. Hasbro has started using a face printing process earlier this year for Marvel movie characters that is very similar to work we’ve seen from imports like Bandai’s Figuarts. It started with the Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Legends earlier this year. Then they went on to use it for Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok. After having these Black Panther figures in hand for a few days, it’s incredible to see how much that process has improved, and how much better the end product is because of it.

At this point it almost feels like we are holding little actors. All of the likenesses in this wave are really good, but the Nakia profile just blows me away.

While the likeness and paints are great, there is still room for improvement here. First off, I hate to be that guy but I think now is the time to convert: we’re going to need double elbows on the female figures. Nakia and Okoye need more range in their arms to play around with their melee weapons. Also, the plastic quality could use a little improvement. I understand that this is a $20 mass market toy, and we are probably getting close to pushing the boundaries of that price tier. However, it would be nice to get a Marvel Legend on occasion whose leg isn’t bending inward, warping the knee joint, so that even if I straighten it out the knees will still be loose. It happens quite a bit and Nakia is just one of the more recent victims of this.

Would I recommend Hasbro Marvel Legends Okoye Series Nakia?

Absolutely! The stunning face printing is a thing to behold with your own eyes. The likeness, colors, and articulation are all just right. Nakia is a very satisfying release. She looks gorgeous, and really excites me for all of the updated faces we will be getting in the Infinity Ware movie line. On the subject of Infinity War, this figure has double relevance this year as Nakia has screen time in the new Avengers flick as well. In a way we are getting double the value with Nakia!

Nakia has also been added to the Marvel Legends Photo Archive, just figured I’d plug the pointless project I’ve taken on!
