To me, the Black Series mantra has always been “pretty good figures if you can get past the paint, specifically the paint details on their faces.Grand Moff Tarkin marks a shift in Hasbro’s six-inch Star Wars Black Series action figure line. By this, I mean absolutely no disrespect to Island Journey Rey. We’re still working our way through her story, so there will be plenty more figures of her going forward. But Tarkin is as big a bad guy as it gets for the Black Series line, and they absolutely nailed it. Face printing on top of those incredible Gentle Giant sculpts has officially taken this toy line to the next level.

It looks as though the foundation for Tarkin’s sculpt was laid by Rogue One’s Director Krennic, who will probably never get an update with a new face-printed head. The arms and legs are definitely his. I suppose that somewhere between the ranks of ‘Director‘ and ‘Grand Moff‘ you lose the cape. Such a shame, I really dug it.

While Tarkin is great on his own, he comes with one hell of an accessory: the IT-O Interrogator Droid. The droid comes with all of his little silver torture devices exposed. The sculpt is well detailed and the paint lines are mostly clean. The figure also comes with a stand that is ball-jointed at the end so that you can tilt it in different directions. Really, any new droids to the six-inch line should be considered a victory, but this is a pretty damn good one!

The droid is great. Tarkin’s hands, however, are a bit of a mystery. He’s given two open hands but nothing to hold with said hands. Obviously you wouldn’t give him a blaster, since he never used one in the movie. But maybe instead make his left hand a fist? The right hand with the trigger finger wouldn’t be bad if the range of the arm could actually bring his hand to his face. Then you could put him in a pensive pose. Luckily Tarkin is a guy who can be posed with his hands behind his back while we marvel at his amazing face. When Hasbro gets to Admiral Motti the articulation will have to be reevaluated.

Now for a little segment I like to call, “ACCESSORIZE MY TARKIN!

Unfortunately I don’t yet have a good Vader to go with my Tarkin. I’ve been told that the 40th Anniversary one is just about perfect, but I’ve been hesitant to pull the trigger. I do have the A New Hope Darth Vader from Figuarts preordered to arrive next month. He may scale a little small next to Tarkin, but if the figure is as good as it looks I can probably look past that.

It’s unfortunate that we JUST got two versions of A New Hope Leia from Hasbro, because I doubt they want to go back and do yet another with face printing. I think the safest play here is to either be satisfied with the Black Series release, or wait it out for the Figuarts. I’m probably going to go Figuarts because Hasbro’s soft goods just aren’t doing it for me.

Finally, I think that I finally need some of those GTP Space Walls. This is something that I’ve chronically drug my feet on and now they are out of stock!

Would I recommend Hasbro Star Wars Black Series Six-Inch Grand Moff Tarkin?

Uh yeah!

If you are a stickler for accuracy, maybe hit his hair lightly with a white dry brush. Other than that, he’s damn near perfect!

Grand Moff Tarkin is part of the first wave of figures for the ‘Solo – A Star Wars Story.‘ I believe the official shelf date for these figures is April 20, 2018. However, quite a few Walmarts and comic book stores have begun selling these early. Check around and you may come up big!
