Marvel vs Capcom 3 Minimates – Dr. Doom vs Wesker Review

For as cool a villain as Wesker is it is very surprising how little he is made into a toy or action figure.  The guy has been a staple of the Resident Evil franchise for over a decade, finally meeting his current (because they would probably bring him back anyway) final death at the end of Resident Evil 5.  His son will be headlining Resident Evil 6.  Yet you can count on your one hand the number of times he has been immortalized in plastic.  Art Asylum has fixed this injustice by including Wesker in a two-pack of Marvel vs Capcom 3 minimates series three.  Sure it’s based on his fighting game appearance, but us Wesker fans have to take what we can get.

Oh and Dr. Doom is in this pack too!

Marvel vs Capcom 3 Minimates Dr. Doom and Wesker

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is something I like the idea of a lot more than the execution.  I find that my brain must not be wired for fighting games and I grew up honestly thinking that I was really good at them.  I realized the fatal flaw in that logic was that my only fighting game experience was against my brother, so I never really progressed my skills only playing against the same person all these years.  So when I brought Marvel vs Capcom 3 home, I instantly found myself on the wrong end of endless juggle combos and eventually gave up.  The game just wasn’t for me.

Luckily I don’t have to log onto Xbox Live to play with Minimates so this set was right up my ally.  I finally get my Albert Wesker in a scale he has yet to come in!  I also got Dr. Doom who is playing the role of the guy that just doesn’t matter much to me at all.  They could have packaged Wesker with a mound of clay and I would have been just as happy.  The nice thing is that Dr. Doom actually has some cool features.  I have no clue if he is a reuse from the past 300 waves of Marvel Minimates, but that doesn’t matter to me because I never had him before.

The package comes in a nice window display clearly showing the two characters we will be getting.  There was no mystery, no blind bags, or chase figures to worry about.  I was getting what I saw and I liked that, I remember when Palz (yes those old Palisades block figures) started coming in blind boxes, that made me very sad.  The only issue I had with the packaging was that the insert poster was a little bit askew as you can see in my shot … but it’s nothing to make a big deal about.

Minimate Holster!

In the package you get Doom, Wesker, a Doom gun, a Wesker gun, and clear stand, and a fire-wave-jumpy stand.  I’m not positive who gets the fiery jumping stand since I haven’t played enough MvC3 to remember so I gave it to Wesker.  Doom can have the clear stand because all of his garments make him a little lopsided.  Little guns are very easy to lose and one thing Doom does very right is he actually has a little holster for his.  Let’s face it Doom isn’t always running around with his gun, usually he’s just doing Dr. Doom things like shooting energy beams out of his hands.

Now for who I really bought this two-pack for, Albert Wesker.  As I said earlier Wesker is one character that seems to get snubbed the most in Resident Evil toy lines.  Toy Biz didn’t even bother doing him.  Palisades did a very good Wesker but he didn’t have hands that could hold a gun.  The only other company to do Wesker was Hot Toys and they were a bit out of my price range at the time … and now the secondary market is completely unaffordable.  So if we can’t get bigger we will then have to get smaller.

This Wesker is based on the Marvel vs Capcom 3 iteration obviously.  MvC3 based their model off of the Resident Evil 5 Wesker … the super-villain decked out in black and a long flowing trench coat.  He looks really good and captures the character.  If I had to nit-pick I would say the hairpiece intrudes a little too much onto the face.  It could have probably been scaled back slightly and he would have been fine.  It would have also been cool to get the glasses-off evil eyes face of his … even if they just put it on the back of the head, then you can choose which Wesker you want.

Past those tiny issues I have Wesker he’s well made and true to the character.  Mine has strong joints and stands up well.  Dr. Doom is also a great representation of the character.  I’m not the biggest minimate collector in the world but I have always had a huge amount of respect for the amount of depth they get out of their licenses.  It’s nice to be able to make the entire cast of Marvel vs Capcom 3 for a very reasonable price.

Where can you pick up this two-pack?  I would suggest Amazon if you don’t like leaving your house.  They are also available at Toys “R” Us and you may be able to find one at a comic shop if you are lucky.
