The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins 6″ Review + Gallery

I’m going to unofficially call this Hobbit week here at Preternia, between finding a bunch of Bridge Direct Hobbit figures and NECA’s quarter scale Gollum … I would say Hobbity things are hopping around here!  So this brings us to the halfling of the hour, the hobbit who has adventure in his blood: Bilbo Baggins.

The first thing I noticed with the initial Bilbo press pictures was I thought his face was a little off.  I thought they made him a little bit, for lack of a better word, dopey.  I’m pleased to report that the face on the final product actually has a very close resemblance to the actor playing Bilbo, Martin Freeman.  He has a very natural skin tone and a good amount of paint detail, a lot more precise than Thorin’s.

Bilbo comes with a decent array of accessories: a knapsack, water, and Sting (his sword).  Both his knapsack and water bottles have straps and can be slung over his shoulders.  Sting can be placed in its sheathe under Bilbo’s overcoat.  I figured I would compare the sizes of the accessories from the Bridge Direct and Toybiz versions of the figures, and while I don’t have a Toybiz Bilbo, I do have Frodo and he comes with Sting as well.  The Sting in the Toybiz line is slightly bigger which makes sense because the Toybiz figures are very slightly bigger than the Bridge Direct figures.  However if you want a more imposing Sting, the larger one will still fit in Bilbo’s hand.

Bilbo’s articulation is pretty standard for a six-inch scaled figure.  They are swivel/ball joints so certain parts of the coat, mainly the elbows and knees can get into odd-looking positions.  The good thing is he is not in any kind of action pose and also his feet are large enough that he has no balance issues.  He is very easy to stand up and won’t fall down.

I’d addressed the paint earlier when talking about the head, but the rest of the body’s paint is very well done as well.  There is a dark wash over the clothes and on his mop of hair.  His deco looks like he popped out of the trailer.

What can be said about Bilbo?  He looks good, he is the main character of the film, and he is kind of the anchor of the line.  I’m sure they will be making variants down the line as we see his progression through the films.  For now we have the quintessential version of the character to carry us through the first movie.

You can currently preorder Bilbo on Amazon, depending on the flavor you prefer it can be in six-inch (the version reviewed) or the four-inch scale one.

Also I tried for the first time to do a video review.  I usually just use my Youtube channel for video game stuff, but I figured I’d give it a whirl.  It’s nothing earth shattering, but you can see him in all his glory.
