MOTUC Mekaneck Review + Gallery

Mekaneck was one of those characters that took me by surprise when Matty announced him.  Realistically, I should have seen him coming a mile away because we had already gotten Stinkor. Stinkor, for those who don’t know, is pretty much all the extra tooling (besides the head obviously) that was needed for Mekaneck.  Part of my surprise might have been exactly how vintage heavy this year is, and that they decided to hit a lot of those heavily fan requested characters.

MOTUC Mekaneck Review

I’m a big Mekaneck fan.  I think this stems from my adoration of Inspector Gadget, I’d always wanted extending appendages as a child.  Unfortunately I live in a time where technology has not kept up with how I want to modify my body, so the next best thing is to live out my dreams through my toys.  This is why Mekaneck was a favorite of mine as a child, and that feeling still holds strong today.  I was also a big fan what they did with him in the 200x line, and I’ll even vouch for the crazy snake attachments later in the line.

Where the 200x line added to the character, the Classics version stuck very strictly to the vintage formula.  This can be a blessing and a curse depending on what you are looking for.  I find the characters I like the most are the ones that can capture the vintage look and feel while adding modern attributes.  This version of Mekaneck is a vintage copy on the MOTUC buck.  I would personally have liked a few added details like a longer loincloth, mechanical wrists, or some green on the visor.  Even without those enhancements, I still think the figure turned out great … but that is not without a little bit of missed opportunity.

As I had expected, they accomplished the extending neck by using extensions.  However I did not expect that they would give us a couple to choose the amount of neck we wanted to use.  Mekaneck comes with both a five-inch and two-inch neck extension, and yes you can stack them on top of each other if you don’t mind seeing the blue ring half way up the neck.  The extensions are fairly strong on their own and turned out thicker than I would have thought they would be.  However if you are like me and thought you could stack his neck parts to the sky you will find out it is harder than you think.  The extensions will buckle under pressure and bend as you add more length.  Even adding two sets of neck extensions proved to be too much for poor Orius.

There are a couple of things you should look out for with Mekaneck.  First the issue flavor of the last couple months is the painted-over black plastic.  The black plastic is still here, and will show around the joints if you move them around too much.  The other big thing is the head.  I guess it is slightly constructed wrong because his visor and helmet lay slightly crooked on his head.  From certain angles it is not even noticeable, but it is the same as the Fedex “arrow,” if you notice it once it is impossible to unsee.  If you are daring, you could attempt to go in and try to lower his visor a bit by jamming his head further in.  But I will warn you, separating the head from the helmet is not an easy task.

MOTUC Mekaneck Review

All-in-all, I really like Mekaneck.  He works well for what he is, a carbon copy of the vintage figure sans the action feature.  The other thing I really like about him is he brings some needed height difference to the shelf.  Sticking him right up front with his five-inch neck is extremely satisfying.  I do wish they had taken a few liberties with giving him some modern updates, those types of things made figures like Fisto and Moss Man home-runs instead of just doubles.  Mekaneck makes a perfect vintage clone but a decent (but not great) Classics figure.  Regardless you will have a lot of fun playing with his neck extensions, I spend at least a few minutes each day changing and adjusting them.

If you missed out on Matty sale day, Mekaneck is available on Amazon.

It’s also worth noting, the blue body can bring you closer to a custom Comic Royal Guard Randor.  You really would just need to dye the armor gold and get a Skeletor waist piece.
