Funko Legacy Game of Thrones S1 Jon Snow Review

Out of nowhere the Funko Legacy line is a go!  There were no prototypes shown and very little information put forth from Funko until the figures just showed up at retail.  All we really knew ahead of time was that Funko (the company famous for their vinyl POP line) was working on a six-inch scale series and their first license was going to be Game of Thrones.  They decided not to show any early sculpts, and it looks like they planned on revealing the first wave at Toy Fair and then letting us know we can get it in stores as of the 15th of February.  It was a cool idea, but unfortunately they either got beat by the distribution or Barnes and Noble dropped the ball on the street date.  The figures are everywhere now, so check out Barnes and Noble if you want a set!

It was a smart move by Funko to go for the six-inch scale with these figures because they will get crossover as the same people who collect Star Wars Black will probably want these as well.  I’d imagine that the they are the same purchasing demographic since kids that grew up watching Star Wars are probably now following Game of Thrones.

The first wave’s assortment comes with six figures and each ones is individually numbered.  They also come in boxes that are very similar to the Star Wars Black series’ square packaging.  Funko’s packaging works out well if you like to keep it (I don’t) because you can easily place the figure back in for storage since you won’t damage it taking them out.  The box also has a nice side profile displaying the Game of Thrones logo along with the character’s name and crest.  It looks like something that should be on a book store shelf, and that makes perfect sense being they are currently a timed exclusive to Barnes and Noble.

While not perfect, Jon Snow has a pretty good likeness to the character on the show.  At the store I had a choice between a figure with a more full beard but a lazy eye, or the one I got which has less of a beard but decent paint on the face.  I’ll take the less accurate beard over a lazy eye any day!  The face grew on me pretty quickly and if I’m not rabidly comparing it to screen caps from the show it’s a good enough Jon Snow for my display. These figures remind me a lot of the first series of Bridge Direct Hobbit six-inch toys.  The Bridge put a lot of detail work into the armor, but the strike against their figures was the soft face sculpts.  The armor or costume work on the Game of Thrones toys is superb.  The articulation is also all very plentiful and useful, so you don’t see the large skirts or capes blocking movement.  These guys are definitely a step above the Hobbit figures, but to be fair they also retail slightly higher so that expectation might be there anyway.

Jon comes with one accessory being his sword.  He also has a sheath for the sword on his left side, so he can put it away when he isn’t engaged in battle.  The sword is made of an interesting material I don’t recall seeing used before.  I’m used to the soft plastic Mattel and Hasbro tend to use that warps really easy and is then impossible to correct.  The plastic on his sword seems to give way and bend if you apply pressure, but it is also very easy to correct.  It probably would also snap if I put too much pressure on it.  I have a slight scrape of the paint on my sword, and interestingly enough I think it might be made of clear plastic.  Jon Snow’s joints are also made of clear plastic.  I may be on to a conspiracy here!

So these Game of Thrones figures retail for $19.95 at Barnes and Noble currently.  If you have a store near you I highly suggest checking them out in person because there are some pretty poorly painted figures.  I had to take my chance online with Tyrion since he was sold out, so we’ll see how the paint applications lottery goes with that.  What can I say about my first Funko Legacy Game of Thrones figure?  Jon Snow is a good solid figure.  While the toy isn’t perfect and there could be improvements made, this is a great first start for Funko’s six-inch figure line.  I think the important thing for them is to see what worked and what didn’t with the final products and hopefully improve as the line moves along.  I am interested to see where we go from here.
