Hasbro Marvel Legends Winter Soldier Captain America Review

I fell asleep during the first Captain America movie.

I wasn’t a fan of Avengers.

I assume at some point I’ll go see the new Captain America movie, Winter Soldier.  But I’m not in any rush, and would probably only see it as a social event or just wait for it to hit cable.

So then why on earth did I buy the Winter Soldier movie version of Captain America?  Well he isn’t a bad Captain America action figure by any means.  He comes with extra parts which I’m always a fan of.  He also contains a part to complete my Mandroid.  I suppose three “pros” are a good enough reason to buy an eighteen dollar figure.

I just recently reviewed the “Marvel NOW!” Captain America that came with the first wave of this Mandroid build-a-figure series.  I was pretty satisfied in calling him the best Captain America in my collection, even if he did have a bit of a lazy eye.  This version I am pretty satisfied with as well.  Even if I won’t see the movie I think the costume design is much more down to earth.  It isn’t as flashy with the bright red, white, and blues right in your face.  This makes it look more like a military uniform as opposed to a costume.

The Captain comes with a whole mess of extra parts this time around as well!  He has two extra hands, a shield, extra head, and Mandroid’s right leg.  His hands come in the options of two fists, a straight out right hand, and a pointing left hand.  I totally get the pointing hand because you have a lot of different options for that pose, even if some might be immature …

On the other hand I’m not sure I understand why they included the flat hand.  The only thing I could think of was so people could ironically pose him in a Nazi salute.  You could also do the “talk to the hand” thing that was so big … back, whenever that was big.  The hand is also probably pretty good if Captain America is serving hor d’oeuvres at a dinner party.

I’m not sure how I feel about the shield this time around.  I like the color scheme but I’m not a fan of how he straps it on to his arm.  I thought the previous wave’s shield with the clip was easier to attach.  It also was able to plug into his back for easy transport when he isn’t doing the shield thing.  This one can either be put oh his arm, or discarded into the bin of extra accessories.  I prefer the clip/plug over the plastic straps.

Finally let’s discuss the Mandroid angle of this whole situation.  My biggest problem with how the Mandroid parts were dealt out is that the torso section should have really come with the first series.  It’s annoying to have parts sitting all over the place while you wait for section to plug them in to.  Literally every piece needs that body section so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be included in the first wave.  Afterall Iron Monger’s torso was in the first half-wave.

Let’s compound the issue by packing the torso part in with Black Widow.  I have no issue with packing it in with her, however, she has a few factors that are making her impossible to find.  There was no Black Widow in the original Avengers movie Marvel Legends wave, so this is the first Scarlett Johanson version of the character in six-inch scale.  This makes her extremely desirable to both people completing Mandroid and the ones who want a complete Avengers squad.  Remember way back when Toybiz used to have horrible case ratios?  Well it looks like that thought process is back in effect because Widow is one per case.  Unless you are the first person to hit a store after a new case you missed out.

I’ve had no luck with Widow.  Unless she shows up on Amazon or something I have found some better use for my Mandroid parts:

I understand that Hasbro is catering to whatever the Targets and Toys R Us (is Walmart carrying these?) of the world want, and not the collector that buys the case.  But here would be the perfect case pack that would ensure collectors could actually make two Mandroids if they bought a case of each series:
Proposed Case Pack

Actual Case Pack
Wave 1:
1x Marvel Now! Captain America (Mandroid Head)
1x WW2 Captain America (Mandroid Head)
1x Baron Zemo (Mandroid Right Arm)
1x AIM Soldier (Mandroid Right Arm)
1x Red Skull (Mandroid Left Arm)
1x Hydra Soldier (Mandroid Left Arm)
Wave 2:
2x Movie Captain America (Mandroid Right Leg)
2x Movie Winter Soldier (Mandroid Left Leg)
2x Movie Black Widow (Mandroid Torso)
Wave 1:
1x Marvel Now! Captain America (Mandroid Head)
1x WW2 Captain America (No BAF Part)
1x Baron Zemo (Mandroid Right Arm)
1x AIM Soldier (Mandroid Right Arm)
1x Red Skull (Mandroid Left Arm)
1x Hydra Soldier (Mandroid Left Arm)
Wave 2:
3x Movie Captain America (Mandroid Right Leg)
2x Movie Winter Soldier (Mandroid Left Leg)
1x Movie Black Widow (Mandroid Torso)

So with a very minor tweak to the first wave, and a really simple adjustment to the second a person who bought two cases can make two Mandroids out of this series.  I would think for a build-a-figure with easy army building potential this mix would make the most sense!  It would also make it a little more fair for the people trying to just complete one since the Black Widow would then be slightly more available.

* Heil bad case ratios! *

The Winter Soldier version of Captain America is a pretty solid figure.  If you can find one with a decent set of eyes he’s a very decent value for everything you get: alternate hands, alternate head, and a Mandroid part.  The other advantage is that he is heavily packed in his case, so we should be seeing more of these as the cases are unloaded into stores.  If for some reason you can’t find him Amazon has had him on a pretty regular basis between $17 – $21 which is a great price!

  1. Nice review!

And yes, it is going to be a real pain in the neck to find Black Widow. Plus, she comes with two separate heads, so some collectors will want more than one of her.

    1. Thank you!

Yeah Black Widow situation just sucks. At this point I’ve wasted enough gas and refreshed Amazon too many times to bother continuing.

If I find her, nice, but I’m willing to live with an incomplete Mandroid.

  2. What?! These hit stores? I’m still sitting here with the Spider-Man wave… and not the good figures either, anywho nice review Jon!

  3. maybe they wanted Cap’ to “walk like an egyptian”. i agree i didn’t think the Avengers flick was all that great. on the Captain America movie it just died after rogers got the serum when it should have picked up. the unmasked head looks nothing like chris evans, which is not a bad thing.

    1. Yep! The movie figures likenesses in general have been questionable at best.

I think they assume as long as the costume looks good who gives a shit about the face? Dunno. It is odd though.
