Funko Blizzard Heroes of the Storm Mystery Minis Review

Funko’s Heroes of the Storm Mystery Mini’s have hit stores just in time for the open beta of the popular Blizzard MOBA.  As with most blind-boxed series I was in need of a full set, so I optioned to purchase the sealed retail case.  This works out in my favor this time around since there are twelve figures in the set, and case ratios for each figure are set to 1/12.  There are no chases so buying a sealed case will net you the entire series.  What a joyous occasion!

Currently Heroes of the Storm has about 36 playable characters so Funko had a lot of material to choose from.  It looks as though they did a nice even spread of three unique characters per franchise (Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo) with variants filling in the last three slots.  The breakdown is as follows:

Starcraft:
Jim Raynor
Nova (Clear Variant)
Kerrigan
Nova
Jim Raynor (Stars and Stripes Skin Variant)

Warcraft:

Diablo:

So now we have the load out of a full case, but how are the figures?  The figures are solid and have a little heft to them.  At first this surprised me  because the only other minis I had gotten from Funko were the Guardians of the Galaxy bobble heads.  Then it occurred to me that the bobble heads are probably made hollow so that they can bounce around.  It all makes sense to me now! These guys are nice and sturdy with minimal parts that can break off from rough play.

* Although who really plays rough with mini figures?

The heft is nice and the paint is really well done all around.  I don’t see any major paint bleeds or chipping on any of the figures.  Nova falls backwards easily and I think that is because of her ponytail.  Also Tyrael needs to be on a flat surface because his wings are used in conjunction with his feet to prop him up.

I’ve always been of the mind that video games like DOTA, Heroes of the Storm, or League of Legends lend themselves well to mini figures.  As much as I like a good six or seven-inch figure it’s unreasonable to think that scale can accommodate a 50+ character roster.  I know NECA is about to take a stab at it with Heroes of the Storm, and I wish them the best because I want them badly.  However, it’s nice that Funko is able to get nine unique characters made in the first series.  Obviously development time and production resources are a lot less for unarticulated mini figures.

So where can the Blizzard Mystery Minis be found?  I’d check the typical places like Gamestop, Target, or Barnes and Nobles.  If not Amazon has singles and cases available, or check Entertainment Earth which is the place I got my case from.

Will there be a second wave?  I sure hope so.  As much as I have a real fetish for incomplete video game rosters, I’d be super excited to see a sizable chunk of the Heroes of the Storm cast turned plastic.  Maybe Funko can hook up with Valve some time and we can have MOBA Mystery Mini wars or something.  I have to admit these figures are probably my favorite things Funko is currently doing …

… so that means they will probably stop soon.  I’m rambling, good night!

Oh yes, I also made a video opening these guys.
