NECA Pacific Rim Ultra Deluxe Winged Otachi Review

We all knew it was coming!  It was just a matter of WHEN it was coming.  I reviewed the original Otachi back in February, so it was about four months later that the winged version hit stores.  All of the Kaiju released except Leatherback were made with the intention of reusing the body.  Otachi had a very unique body, but since she had two phases (to use video game terminology) NECA got a second shot at using that main body.

Firstly I want to talk about the box.  Man, was it hard to get a good shot of her in there!  She’s so far back that I felt like a scuba diver looking into a moray eel’s cove.  She’s in there but so much space is needed for the wings that her body and head sit in the way back of the package.  Not a big deal as I’m impatient and wanted to free her from her package, so I didn’t stress over getting the best in package shot of Otachi.

The obvious change is that she lost the tail and gained a pair of wings.  It sounds simple enough, but there is actually a surprising amount of new sculpting and paint work that went into this version of Otachi.  As far as accessories this one comes with a large flight stand and a new tongue piece.  The alternate tongue is the one that she sticks into the Hong Kong bunker that Charlie Day (I forget his name in the movie, but does it really matter?) is hiding in.  The regular tongue is also a new sculpt, and like its predecessor it’s also really hard to pop out at first!  I ended up pushing a flat head screwdriver into the crease and prying it out.  Once you get it out once you are golden, however.

I mentioned in my original review that Otachi’s body and especially the tail were built like a S.H. MonsterArts figure using ball jointed segments.  The advantage of this approach really shines when you have both versions of the Kaiju because it’s easy to mix and match which segments you want to use.  Since the flying version does not include the tail, the joint is still there but it is covered by a bloody stump.  The stump can be removed and tail attached if you have one.

Another part that can be removed is the head and neck sections.  Winged Otachi’s neck differs from the regular release in that the throat has been slashed so it isn’t inflated.  The inside of the mouth is also painted differently.  Winged Otachi seems to have more acidic “slop” around the outside of her mouth.

In a way, you can almost consider Winged Otachi an upgrade kit of sorts.  It gives you the tools to create your absolute favorite version of the Kaiju.  And there is no real wrong answer here.  Go nuts and pull your Otachi apart and give the flying version a tail.  Switch out the head.  I think it’s pretty cool how they had the long term plan to make these figures so interchangeable.  With the sudden surge of mix and match figures like Hasbro’s Mashers, Playmates’ TMNT Mix and Match, and Mattel’s WWE Create a Superstar, mixing is totally in.  I doubt NECA would want to put the resources towards it, but the idea would be pretty neat with Kaiju.  Build your own Kaiju with whatever appendages you choose!

I love the original Otachi and I’m quite fond of this winged version.  The only problem I have is that I have no clue where to put him?  My Pacific Rim display was already packed in tight, and now this guy’s giant wingspan is going to cause me to rearrange.  Once I finally figure out what the do with both Otachi, then Mutavor is going to be out and I’ll be right back at square one.  I guess having too many figures is a much better problem than not enough.

Winged Otachi is similarly priced like the original at around $60 – $70 depending on where you buy her.  I’ve been using the NECA eBay and Amazon store of late since they seem to get things early.  They also save me on gas money since I don’t needlessly drive to Toys R Us only to discover disappointment.  I’ve said it many times, but I’ll repeat it often that the NECA Pacific Rim line is one of my favorites to collect.  I wasn’t over the moon for the movie, but having decent toys of robots versus giant monsters is fantastic.  I consider myself of the “go big or go home” class of Pacific Rim collector because I’ll grab it all.  I think most people sane people would probably buy one version of Otachi.  Both of the figures have their own advantages.  The wings are gorgeous, but then again so is that tail!  Can’t decide?  Guess you’ll have to get both then after all.
