Hasbro Marvel Legends Civil War Giant Man Build-A-Figure Captain America Review

Marvel Legends Civil War Giant Man Build-A-Figure Review

Finally we have our illustrious build-a-figure for the second Captain America: Civil War wave, Giant Man.  Depending on your threshold for spoilers, he could ruin a “surprise” in the movie.  I’m a bit shocked that they haven’t shown Ant-Man growing yet in any of the trailers, especially when toys depicting it are slated to come out.  LEGO already has a set on the shelves featuring Giant Man at an airport, and on top of that this wave exists and I own it.  So if they are merchandising this scene ahead of time is it really a spoiler?  Would knowing that Ant-Man becomes large in this movie really ruin it for anybody?

I’ve always been the guy to search out what happens in a movie before I see it.  Surprises do nothing for me.  I like knowing what is going to happen, and feeling that anticipation towards it.  In my opinion, a good movie can’t rest on the audience going in blind.  In this day and age with the internet that just isn’t a realistic expectation.  The journey towards that destination has to be good or what’s the point?  I think M. Night Shyamalan’s body of work has made it abundantly clear that resting your story on a twist or secret is a terrible idea.

However, I respect people’s want to go into movies blind.  Thus I’d never go out of my way to blatantly spoil an upcoming or recently released movie for anybody.  In the case of Civil War, Giant Man is out there on the shelves.  I don’t believe I am spoiling anything with this review.

And here’s another picture of Giant Man being punched in the groin!

Giant Man is a brand new sculpt, and it isn’t just an up-scaled version of the the Ultron series’ Ant-Man.  The original Ant-Man wasn’t even accurate to the movie it represented, so they obviously couldn’t use that!  The Ant-Man/Giant Man suit has been tweaked a bit for the Civil War movie.  There are a few minor modifications to the design of the suit, but the biggest difference is the helmet which has been completely redesigned.  It seems to be inspired by Ultraman or Kamen Rider.  I’m not going to pretend to know anything about those properties, but their design elements are very prevalent in that helmet.

The paint applications on this figure are really sharp.  I’m a big fan of the black, red, and silver Ant-Man suit so it is great to see all of its details are very cleanly painted in.  It’s an especially nice touch that his eyes can be seen through the visor in his helmet!

Giant Man has a typical Marvel Legends articulation scheme, however, it has a few issues.  First, his abdominal joint is surprisingly limited.  I was hoping for a little more forward and backward hunch, but alas it’s not in the cards for Scott Lang.  The plastic in his legs is a little more “gummy” than I’d like.  It ends up causing his hips to be floppy, so it takes a bit of a balancing act to get him standing.  More athletic or action oriented poses are tough because of the hip and ab joints.

All in all, Giant Man is a great but pretty obvious choice for a Captain America: Civil War themed build-a-figure.  I have a feeling that a lot of people will be going for Black Panther and building Giant Man, then ditching the rest of the wave.  Hopefully not too many of them decide to repackage and return their figures to the store.  We seem to be seeing that far too much of that these days and it’s a shame.  Giant Man’s wave should be going up for preorder soon, so keep an eye on the Amazons and Entertainment Earths of the world to get in.

EDIT: Entertainment Earth now has cases for sale!

In order to build Giant Man you will need to following figures: Movie Captain America, Movie Iron-Man, Movie Black Panther, Nuke, Nick Fury, and Red Guardian.  I’m not sure I have it in me to review those last two, we’ve already had so many movie versions of Cap and Tony.

  1. Look I’m not here to tell you what you have to review but for your inevitable review of CW Cap just show comparison pics with the AOU Cap so I know if I need to buy it or not 😛 Don’t even write anything.
