DC Collectibles Batman The Animated Series Ventriloquist and Scarface Review

Review Advent Calendar Day 5: DCC Batman TAS Ventriloquist and Scarface

I haven’t touched DC Collectibles on this site in a while, have I? Wow, it’s actually been over a year since my last review of Harley Quinn from ‘Batman: The Animated Series.‘ Quite a bit of time has passed, but I’ve still obtained every single figure in DCC’s animated Batman line that isn’t a vehicle. Now would be a good time to take a look at my all-time favorite villain from the animated show …

Back when I was a kid and watching ‘Batman: The Animated Series‘ the idea of the The Ventriloquist Arnold Wesker was fascinating to me. At the time I really didn’t understand mental illness all that well, so the idea of a dissociative identity disorder was above my head. I understood that the puppet was being controlled by Arnold, but the way they wrote him always left that doubt in my mind. And it certainly didn’t help my confusion when they aired the episode where some thugs hired a little guy to play Scarface in order to get Wesker back into crime.

DC Collectibles has been releasing figures with their looks from both ‘Batman: The Animated Series‘ and ‘The New Batman Adventures‘ for this line. In some cases we’ve already had characters like Batman and Joker in both of their appearances. Other times we’ll get a look from one show and kind of hope they eventually go back and do the other, such as with Mr. Freeze. I’m always partial to ‘The Animated Series‘ so I’m tickled that they did The Ventriloquist and Scarface from that show.

The designs for villains like The Ventriloquist and Mr. Freeze were so much more multi-dimensional in ‘The Animated Series.‘ By covering up those character’s eyes with their glasses or goggles they were able to give them an air of ominousness while also making them sympathetic when needed. I felt like the transition into ‘New Batman Adventures‘ took a little bit away from The Ventriloquist by revealing his eyes. This telegraphed his crazy helplessness to Scarface, and made him a bit more of  a one-dimensional character.

Wesker and Scarface come packed with a Tommy Gun for Scarface, two extra pairs of hands for The Ventriloquist, and a display stand. Scarface acts as an extra hand since there is a peg in his back that fits into Wesker’s wrist-hole. It’s actually a really smart idea! The only issue with it is that I wish they had given the rubbery plastic in his back a slightly larger opening. From plugging the arm in and out, a circular section of the plastic has begun to wear away. It’s not really a big deal since it’s in Scarface’s back, but they probably could have just cut it that way to begin with.

Overall, The Ventriloquist and Scarface feel like they have been ripped right from the cartoon and placed on my desk. Even if I wasn’t collecting this line, these two and Clayface would be my must-haves. It’s even better that the pair turned out as nice as they did. I bought this guy at my local comic shop for $28 … you can often find it for that price or better on Amazon.

Final Verdict: While you are a great figure you’re a nasty little puppet, so get in the NAUGHTY list!things-to-do-between-christmas-and-new-year-s-what-s-up-amsterdam-4owu6g-clipart
