Mezco One:12 NYCC 2017 Exclusive Wolverine Review

While this is actually the fourth announced Wolverine variant in Mezco’s One:12 Collective line, it’s the first one that fans will be able to get their hands on. That is if they preordered it prior to New York Comic Convention. Otherwise, you may be screwed because both Wolverine and Redskull exclusives sold out on the first day of the show, much to the dismay of fans that showed up Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

I’m actually a little bit surprised that Mezco didn’t hold back some stock for each day of the convention. They looked a little bored the rest of the weekend with no more long lines of people there to buy things. Regardless, I got my hands on one, so let’s see how he turned out.

Wolverine includes three heads, four pairs of hands, an Oni mask, and display stand. The head selection is pretty well rounded with a masked neutral face, masked gritting teeth, and unmasked head. His unmasked head is really well done with beautifully sculpted hair and a great Logan facial expression. The only issue with mine is that the paint on his left eye is just slightly askew, giving him a bit of a lazy eye. In a way it works with the facial expression but it’s still an unfortunate blemish on a great sculpt.

The mask is a nice inclusion but I have no idea clue what it is referencing. I’m assuming it’s from his time in Japan, however, I can’t locate a specific issue or panel for it. His mask also doesn’t appear to actually fit over any of his faces, or at least stay on them. It’s nice looking, though! There are even mouth and eye holes so you can see parts of the face underneath.

Coming into this I was curious about how the claws would be handled. The Marvel Legends line has come a long ways from the days where Wolverine claws would warp in the clamshell, but even to this day I’ll get a claw that just won’t stay straight. Mezco dedicated one set of hands to the claws. They aren’t removable so single-claw poses are out of the question without permanent modification. The Mezco claws turned out great! All of them are straight and evenly placed. They are made of stiff plastic and the tips are sharp, so handle them with caution because you could poke your eye out kid. Oh, and it’s possible to push in the tips if you aren’t careful.

I must confess that the Mezco One:12 body is a dream to work with when it comes to swapping out body parts. All of the hands and heads pop off and on with ease. Nothing ever feels like it’s going to break, which is nice. On the subject of hands, he has two open hands but nothing to hold. I’ve come to realize that the regular release Wolverine has a sword, so he can hold that. Or beer cans!

Would I recommend Mezco’s One:12 NYCC Exclusive Wolverine?

If you can get your hands on one for a fair price, hell yes!

Tiger Stripe Wolverine is a really nice figure, but a terrible exclusive. The people want their 90’s X-Men. It’s a puzzling choice to have the most iconic look (sorry brown/yellow suit fans but it’s true) of the character end up as a limited edition exclusive. To Mezco’s credit, they did offer the figure as a preorder to fans who couldn’t attend the show. The person that does lose out here is the one who didn’t preorder because they had Friday, Saturday, or Sunday tickets to NYCC. This is why I personally make it a habit to preorder convention items if the occasion arises, because nothing is guaranteed in life. And the price of shipping outweighs the annoyance of lugging something around a hot, sweaty, and crowded Javits Center.
