Hasbro continues it’s never ending crusade to remove any and all rose-colored glasses when looking back on Toy Biz and early Hasbro Marvel Legends. Next on the list: Silver Surfer. The first Legends Surfer was released almost fifteen years ago in November of 2003 in ML wave five. For the time it was an impressive action figure that included a base with a flight stand, magnetic feet, and Howard the Duck. Much much later, Hasbro reissued the same Surfer without Howard and the base as a Walmart exclusive. Then Hasbro attempted a new Silver Surfer in 2007’s Fantastic Four themed Ronan the Accuser build-a-figure wave. While the figure looked okay, it scaled small and the articulation left a lot to be desired. This new mold was then used as the base for Silver Savage in the Target exclusive Red Hulk build-a-figure wave of 2008.

Then nothing for a decade. Thanks to Steve Walgreens and his belief in the Fantastic Four and their ancillary characters, we can officially welcome back Silver Surfer to the Marvel Legends fold!

Silver Surfer gets his own character box! This is immensely helpful for when it comes time to track him down in stores, because all that you need to look for is the “Silver Surfer” written across the top of it. It’s getting a little harder to quickly identify the Fantastic Four now, as there is a chance that the “4” could belong to Sue, Johnny, or Reed. Who knows, maybe Thing came out and I passed over him? As far as the sculpt is concerned, I think that they picked an appropriate body for Silver Surfer. It’s the same one that Hasbro used for the Klaw that was in a two-pack with Shuri earlier this year. The advantages of this build are the amazing range of the butterfly shoulder joints, lack of cloth wrinkles between the muscle definition, and the nice deep ankle joints.

There are definitely some things to look out for here. First off, Silver Surfer is a shiny dude and good on Hasbro for making him that way. Unfortunately that will come at a price. The figure is cast in a dull silver plastic, and then painted over with a shiny finish. I’ve already noticed some paint rub on the higher friction areas of his body like the shoulders, so I’d expect it to continue to happen. Short of not ever posing him, it will probably be hard to avoid. Maybe just be cognoscente of where the joints are rubbing when setting him up. Maybe buy a spare too, it never hurts to have a backup Marvel Legend.

Silver Surfer comes with a great spread of accessories including his surf board, two energy effects, and three pairs of hands. We’ve gotten a ton of reuse out of the energy effects that originated from 2016’s Havoc figure. These effects are a little different because they are made with clear yellow plastic that has silver flakes inside of it. They also feel a bit more rigid this time around. Three different sets of hands are included: open, fists, and … slap hands? I never know what to call those things. Chop, slap, and diving all work as far as I’m concerned.

I have some issues with Surfer’s board. I don’t think there is any way around it, but not including a stand was a mistake. On top of that, there is no easy way to set this board up with a stand. Most of the stands I have either plug into a peg or clamp down on something. Neither of those options really work here. The bottom of the board is carved and hallowed out a bit, which could possibly fit a thin magnetic strip. I’m curious if maybe the intention was to try something like that but it didn’t end up working out before production? If I recall, at Toy Fair it was mentioned that they wanted to get him some type of stand.

I take that back! This is the same board that came with the Ronan build-a-figure wave’s Silver Surfer. This one isn’t nearly as shiny, however, and the peg hole on the old one is too big for the current Surfer. No shiny board for you!

Would I recommend Hasbro Marvel Legends Walgreens Exclusive Silver Surfer?

Just go ahead and trash any other Silver Surfer Marvel Legends you own. Hell, since this figure isn’t really out yet, go ahead and list your old ones on eBay in preparation because you’ll have no use for them going forward. You have to look past a few annoying flaws, but you aren’t going to find a better Surfer in the Marvel Legends collection. The ankle-rockers are as good as it’s going to get for sick surf board poses.

If only we had a nice stand to elevate his damn board!

I had to call in a favor from a buddy in Mexico in order to get this. I honestly have no clue when it’s going to hit United States retail. I’d imagine if it’s similar to past Walgreens items it will likely start showing up during the Summer. Regardless, I’ll probably say something when it does and plug this review again. As always, you can keep an eye on the Amazons of the world for these to pop up.
