Hey there! It’s been a while. Glad to be back, let’s take a look at Hasbro’s new Scorpion action figure from their “Spider-Man: Far From Home” themed Marvel Legends wave!

Technically, this is the first Scorpion figure in Marvel Legends. Only because Toy Biz did one all the way back in 2004 (and a slightly different retool the next year) for their Spider-Man Classics line. Remember that Spider-Man “kind of but not really Marvel Legends,” series in which each wave would have three Spidey variants and one villain, packed one per case? Tracking down those awesome bad guys was an exercise in madness. You had to make sure you showed up at a freshly stocked store, and hope you were the first one there. Then as new waves hit, the unsold Spider-Man variants would continue to pile up, and the store would eventually just stop stocking new figures altogether. It was a terrible distribution method, so I’m glad Hasbro moved away from it.

Some people claim that the Toy Biz Scorpion still holds up. While he’s definitely one of the better efforts from that era, I don’t think any of it looks that great anymore. The Hasbro line has grown into a completely different aesthetic, and it was time for old Mac Gargan to get an update and join the fold.

The most important thing about this figure is that the bendy tail is great! He has different torso articulation than most Marvel Legends to accommodate the backpack that accommodates his tail. It’s a hybrid of the torso articulation used by the Overwatch figures and Beast from the X-Men wave. I wouldn’t mind seeing Marvel move towards using that torso articulation scheme for future figures. But back to the tail, again it’s awesome! The bendy wireframe allows tons of posing possibilities. It’s also is a painful reminder of what could have been with last year’s static Doc Ock tentacles.

The only real problem I have with this figure is balance. For a figure with a giant backpack and tail, he balances surprisingly well. However, the Hasbro gummy plastic comes into play. I wish they had used a little more sturdy grade of plastic for Scorpion’s legs. As it stands, (or doesn’t, sometimes) I’ve found that over time his legs tend to give out. This seems to be a result of the softer material around his hips and ankles giving way under the heaviness of his upper body. This doesn’t appear to be as big of a problem when Scorpion is standing upright, but in more spread apart poses it can get frustrating.

Would I suggest Marvel Legends Scorpion?

Definitely, he’s a highlight of this wave and long overdue for an update. This one also doesn’t have a dumb missile action feature built into his stinger.

I personally ordered a case of this wave from Entertainment Earth. However, I’ve heard reports that people have begun to find the Molten Man build-a-figure wave in stores like Walgreens. However, if you want to lock one in now, Amazon currently has him up for preorder.
