While we keep hearing that the Masters of the Universe Classics action figure line is “winding down,” we can take solace in the fact that there are a ton of talented customizers creating all new figures. Due to most MOTUC figures using the same basic body it is very easy to change a character just by adding a custom head. You can go even further and find custom weapons and armor. Third party MOTUC (like Transformers) is only limited by how much you are willing to spend.
Today we are going to look at a guy that has been around for years making phenomenal heads for the Classics line. His name is Kevin Kosse and you can reach him through his Facebook page. He has a very deep catalog of custom heads. Some of the more popular ones are his 200x Clawful, 200x Roboto, Phantom, Filmation Skeletor, Battle Damaged Faker, all kinds of Horde Troopers, and the list goes on and on. When he revealed the Filmation Mantenna mouth, this was when all bets were off with me.
I’d generally stayed out of the MOTUC custom head market because of price. Generally you will pay about the price of an actual figure for a custom head. And when these guys like Kevin are based in Germany you have to factor in shipping. Much like with my subscription on Mattycollector, I feel like I have to order multiple items to make the shipping “worth it” to me. Finally seeing that beautiful Mantenna Filmation derpy grin made me take the plunge. I talked to Kevin, put in my order, and paid the man. About a week later my Mantenna mouth arrived, and I can officially kiss his “butt hole” mouth from the official figure goodbye. I already loved Mantenna and wrote a glowing review on him, but what Kevin did brought him to another level for me.
That grin, it’s just perfect. The figure isn’t really true purist Filmation, but the mouth alone makes it the perfect blending of the cartoon and vintage toy. Much like Tom Cruise it completes him! I love it. I haven’t had this much happy emotion towards a Masters of the Universe Classic figure since probably Fisto. It was absolutely worth dropping the dough to get a new mouth for Mantenna.
Again I just want to say you have to check out Kevin’s Facebook page and browse through the photos to see the various heads he has done. I’ll definitely be coming back to him as the need arrises for custom MOTUC heads. The sculpting is fantastic and the paint matches the original perfectly. I highly recommend this man’s work.
