In case you hadn’t heard today, that Avengers 2: Age of Ultron trailer that was supposed to debut next week ended up leaking to quite the fanfare. It appears that Marvel decided instead of having everyone pull it they would roll with the punches and just release the official high quality trailer. So if you haven’t checked it out, well, go on and click here. So now that the hype train has started we’re going to have to start a serious discussion about merchandising. More specifically the Marvel Legends tie-in wave to this movie.
First we can start with what we know thus far. At Hasbro’s press event prior to New York Comic Convention they showed off two figures: Captain America and Hulk. Captain America is in his Age of Ultron attire and Hulk is using a new body so my presumption is that he isn’t a build-a-figure.
As far as a build-a-figure for the Age of Ultron Marvel Legends wave should go, I think if you watched the trailer it’s pretty obvious: Hulkbuster Iron Man. More than likely they would retool the Iron Monger/Mandroid body to accomplish this. Especially since it would scale pretty well with the already revealed Hulk. I can’t even think of another character more deserving of the build-a-figure spot. They could always do Ultron or an Ultron drone, but that would seem like a let-down.
So what characters should be included? The first Avenger movie did Hulk, Hawkeye, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Nick Fury, and Loki. The glaring omission was Black Widow.
New characters sometimes have it the roughest. There has yet to be a Falcon from Captain America 2 or Mandarin from Iron Man 3. Can we expect to get both a Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch? I feel like Quicksilver has a chance, possibly to take that Hawkeye slot. I don’t think Scarlet Witch has a chance at all. Especially since the comic version will be in the upcoming Odin build-a-figure wave in early 2015.
It’s a given there will be at least one normal Iron Man armor. Most likely whatever ‘mark‘ armor he uses in the film. I don’t think Black Widow will be returning considering she just had a release in the Captain America 2 wave that is currently on shelves. I also think the Odin wave will lessen the chances of another Thor.
Finally we get the villain. If they don’t include Ultron they are making a gigantic mistake. However, I think they will! Hasbro is never one to let a good mold reuse get by, so I feel like they may also do an Ultron Drone. We see them briefly in the trailer.
In order to complete a Mandroid/Iron Monger body we need a total of six characters. Here is my prediction for the Avengers: Age of Ultron Marvel Legends lineup:
Hulkbuster Iron Man (Build-a-Figure)
Bonus chase figure just for kicks: Nick Fury with winter hat!
So what say you? I think I played my list pretty safe. Any glaring omissions on my part?
