The 2017 version of Stephen King’s ‘It’ turned out to be one of those remakes that surpasses the original, and a bright spot for modern horror. I, of course, mean no disrespect towards Tim Curry’s role of Pennywise. His portrayal of the murderous clown transcended the mostly garbage movie around him. Then again, Tim Curry was able to make gold out of just about anything (don’t you dare think or say that ‘Congo’ is a bad movie, I’ll cut you). Bill Skarsgard is obviously no Tim Curry, but he’s still pretty great. And it helps that the movie built around his character is actually really good!

At New York Toy Fair this year, Funko announced three sets of ‘It’ action figures. Each three-pack would include a different version of Pennywise packed with two kids. The packs are as follows:

Set 1: Pennywise with arm, Beverly, and Ben
Set 2: Pennywise with balloon, Bill, and Georgie
Set 3: Pennywise with wig, Stan, and Mike
Set 4: Pennywise with crab arms, Richie, and Eddie

Didn’t I just say there were three sets? Well, according to the back of the box there are actually four. Funko didn’t send me the set with Stan and Mike, and I don’t see preorders for it anywhere. So maybe it’s a future exclusive? While Pennywise in a wig is a variant I can probably live without, I can’t complete the loser club without Stan and Mike!

One thing that I really appreciate about these sets of figures is the consistency. While Pennywise borrows looks from different moments of the movie, every member of the losers club is in their attire that they wore in the finale of the film. Georgie is in his iconic yellow rain coat and boots and includes a tiny little S.S. Georgie paper boat (Confession time: I hate the way they handled Georgie’s death scene in the new movie. This is one instance where the original does a better job of showing less for a better impact. It’s fine if you call me a big wimp, but I skip over that part whenever I rewatch the film).

These toys are 3.75-inch scale. Funko no longer does “ReAction,” so instead these are nine-points-of-articulation action figures. The articulation scheme consists of two knees, two hips, two elbows, two shoulders, and a ball-jointed head. All of them have open hands that enable them to hold the included accessories. Again with the consistency, all of the kids come with the weapons that they brought into the well in order to fight Pennywise.

There is one Pennywise variant I wish they had done, but it probably wouldn’t have worked with the standard body. It would have been cool to have gotten a Pennywise with the iron poker through his head.

Movies with child actors are always a tough sell for action figures, and I don’t think most toy manufacturers want to chance this unproven market at retail. It took how many years for NECA to finally do a Newt from Aliens or John Conner from Terminator 2? I appreciate that these three-packs enable Funko to just knock out the entire cast in one fell swoop. The Pennywise figures are also extraordinary for the scale. They did a great job with the face sculpt, and even included some great detail like the cracking of his forehead.
